Fine feathered friends.
We have four species of poultry at Slow Farm, each of which excels at its job while bringing a lot of comic relief! All 100+/- of our sassy birds get to fully free range our 47 acres by day, under the watchful eye of our two livestock guardian dogs. The chickens, ducks, and geese transform banquets of bugs and plants into gorgeous, healthy eggs while our guineas scour the place for ticks, ants, and grasshoppers.
Waterfowl
We rely on our flock of Ancona ducks and Toulouse x American Buff geese to keep our pond ecosystem balanced by eating mosquito larvae, string algae and other plants that might choke everything out without some help.
Anconas are a rare heritage breed originally from upstate NY. We chose them because they are active foragers without being as skittish as some duck breeds, making them easy to work with. You haven’t lived until you’ve enjoyed an Ancona duck egg!
Chickens
When we first started our flock of rare and heritage chickens in 2015, we thought we would breed and sell purebred chicks. But as we got to know our adventurous ladies, it was clear keeping them penned up with the “correct” rooster wasn’t the kind of life we wanted for them. So our commitment to their happy, free ranging lifestyle has resulted in an army of rainbow egg-laying mutt chickens, who are the secret bosses of the farm. Our 75 +/- chickens live truly enviable lives and you can taste it in their eggs.
Guinea Fowl
They’re loud, They’re wild. They’re not too bright, and we are obsessed with them.
Our 12 guinea fowl zip all over our 47 acres in search of ticks, grasshoppers, and fire ants. Sometimes they scream at clouds or the setting sun, but often times they are the first ones on the farm to alert to predator danger—so much so that our livestock guardian dogs have learned to alert when the guineas send up the alarm. It’s a good system.
